The acquittal cleared the way for Ms Jayalalithaa to be sworn in as the state’s chief minister on Saturday, eight months after she was convicted by a Bangalore trial court that held her guilty of amassing wealth disproportionate to her income.
The party’s chief M Karunanidhi, an arch political rival of Ms Jayalalithaa, said he had hoped that the Karnataka government would appeal in the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict quashing the conviction.
But the Karnataka government has said it is yet to decide whether it will at all appeal or not.
The prosecution has alleged that the High Court verdict has in clearing Ms Jayalalithaa, made errors in calculating the rise in her illegal wealth.
The case against Ms Jayalalithaa was filed more than 18 years ago and was pursued by the DMK when it was in power in the state.
