Maharashtra Minister Pankaja Munde Pulled Rs 200-Crore Scam, Says Opposition

Mumbai:  Pankaja Munde, a minister in the Maharashtra government, has been accused by the opposition of a nearly 200-crore scam.

The Congress says it has documents that prove Ms Munde violated rules for a transparent online bidding process and sanctioned inflated deals for items including books and water filters for government-run schools that educate tribal children.

Ms Munde, 35, is the Minister for Women and Child Welfare Development. She is currently in the US. Her father, Gopinath, who died in June 2014, was one of the BJP’s most popular leaders in Maharashtra.

The opposition says that on February 13, she approved as many as 24 contracts with vendors, including some with close links to her family. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who leads a coalition government with the Shiv Sena, has not commented so far on the accusations against his minister. His party’s Shaina NC told NDTV that the Congress, which was voted out in last year’s election, must furnish evidence of its accusations against Ms Munde.

“If at all Pankaja Munde has procured any material at inflated prices, it needs to be probed… (but) every time allegations are made it should be substantiated,” she said to NDTV.

Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar told The New Indian Express, “I have clearly instructed that any purchase above Rs 1 lakh must be completed by inviting tenders.”
