Soldier Killed in Gun Battle With Terrorist in Kashmir

Security forces in Baramulla asked the terrorist to surrender, but he refused, following which the army and police have launched a final assault to eliminate him.

Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir:  One soldier has been killed in a gun battle between security forces and a terrorist in Jammu and Kashmir since this morning, after the police and Army launched a search operation in Rafiabad area of Baramulla district, following a tip-off about presence of terrorists in the area.

According to police sources, one terrorist who is a local is holed up in a residential area of Ladoora village.  Security forces asked the terrorist to surrender, but he refused, following which the army and police have launched a final assault to eliminate him.

Sources say that the terrorist belongs to the Lashkar-e-Islam, a fringe group that has allegedly broken ranks with the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. This group is responsible for the killing of six civilians in North Kashmir’s Sopore area in June.

On August 27, three terrorists were killed and one Pakistani terrorist, Sajad Ahmed, was captured alive in the same area after a 20- hour long gun battle. He was the second Pakistani terrorist to be captured in Jammu and Kashmir this month. On August 5, Mohammad Naveed, trained by the Lashkar, was captured after he attacked a paramilitary convoy in Udhampur.

Sajad has told interrogators that he had been assigned by terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba to re-establish a network in North Kashmir, sources said.
