For This Child, the Prime Minister"s Office Helps Out. But He Needs a Little More.

Varanasi:  The silent world of five-year-old Amreshwar Soni crackled with hope when a letter arrived from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office in February that has the potential to change a life. The PM sent a cheque for Rs three lakh in response to a request from Amreshwar’s father, who said his son needs an operation to improve his hearing.

“The operation costs Rs 5.5 lakh and they have given me Rs 3 lakh. I told them (local officials who coordinate with the PM’s Office) but they are saying I am not the only one who needs help,” said Vishnu Soni, who has four other children he is raising as a single parent.

Each time he takes Amreshwar to the doctor for a check-up, Mr Soni has to shut down his motorcycle repair shop in Varanasi, the PM’s constituency. The losses are tough to sustain. And recently, his oldest child, 12-year-old Dhaneshwar, was diagnosed with thalassemia, a blood disorder, and needs continuing treatment.

As Mr Soni works in his repair shop, the children play dangerously near the highway in the searing heat. He says they are too young to be left alone at home.
