Mulayam Singh Yadav, who is chief of the Samajwadi Party, said the offer of five seats to his party was an insult. His recently-ditched partners have said they hope to find meeting ground.
In the last state and national election, the Samajwadi Party did not win a single seat of Bihar. But by deciding to contest the state alone, it can queer the pitch by splitting both the Muslim and the Yadav vote – two large chunks of the state’s population.
The Janata Parivaar was assembled a few months ago as parties with formerly low tolerance for each other were forced to align in an attempt to block the BJP from winning Bihar. As the non-BJP parties foresaw, the Prime Minister is leading the campaign for his coalition, drawing massive audiences.
